Once
a quaint little fishing village on Cape Fear River, the
City of Southport, North Carolina has come of age.
Where once pirates roamed the riverfront between voyages,
visitors to the South Brunswick Islands now flock to buy treasure
of their own. Southport has become known far and wide for
its eclectic assortment of antique shops, art galleries, boutiques
and upscale restaurants.
Founded in colonial times, Southport, formerly Smithville,
features stately homes overlooking the mouth of the Cape Fear.
Restored homes and cottages from the 1700s and 1800s line
the city's streets and form the basis for an intercepting
walking tour. Southport is also home to Fort Johnston, active
since Colonial times, and to an active arts community.
Southport has consistently been rated one of the best places
to retire in the Southeastern United States; however, you
don't have to be retired to live here. Southport offers a
quiet yet suprisingly active environment in which to live
regardless of your age or the size of your family.
Ideally
located 30 minutes south of the City of Wilmington and 45
minutes to the north of Myrtle Beach, Southport offers a relaxing
alternative to the hustle and bustle of city life. Perfect
for either the retired golf enthusiast or for the family that
is just starting out, you would be hard pressed to find a
more perfect town on the Cape Fear than that of Southport.
